Developed by Red Thread Games, an independent studio established by Ragnar Tørnquist, the creator behind the previous two games, Dreamfall Chapters was backed for development through a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $1.5 million, supplemented by additional funding from the Norwegian Film Institute. The game was brought to life with the blessing of Funcom, the proprietors of The Longest Journey intellectual property, who licensed the development rights to Tørnquist's studio. Upon its release on consoles in 2017, the game received mixed reviews.
Technically, Dreamfall Chapters began its development on the Unity 4 game engine, later transitioning to Unity 5 before the release of its fourth installment. To bolster the Undreaming, Westhouse (operating as "the Prophet") aligns with corrupt Azadi Empire officials and scientist Helena Chang. Together, they aim to construct a massive Engine powered by dream energy in Marcuria, acquired from Stark through Chang's "Dreamachines." Chang, harboring a concealed intention to reshape reality using her "Dreamers," humans endowed with powers equivalent to Lux, had raised Zoë as her own daughter, leading to an intertwined narrative.
In Dreamfall, Zoë's actions result in her falling into a coma and her consciousness becoming trapped in Storytime. She creates a secondary physical body in Stark while trying to awaken herself, devoid of memories from her prior adventures. As Zoë embarks on her journey, she becomes entangled in political turmoil and conspiracies, all the while pursued by agents of deception. After Zoë's coma, Chang relocates her body to a concealed laboratory, while her consciousness lingers in Storytime alongside countless Dreamachine addicts. Zoë inadvertently manifests a secondary physical form in Stark, devoid of her past experiences, and endeavors to forge a new life in Europolis. As she becomes embroiled in political machinations, her latent memories resurface. A twist of fate transfers her from Stark to Arcadia, where she reunites with her avian companion, Crow, setting off on a quest to find Lux.
Simultaneously, Kian's journey unfolds in Arcadia. Amid anti-Azadi rebellion, Kian allies with a young Dolmari urchin named Bip, exposing an impending assault on the magical ghetto. Despite their efforts, the magicals are deported to a remote camp, prompting Kian to witness the grave injustices against them. Armed with evidence of Azadi oppression, Kian rallies allies to thwart the activation of the Engine.
